Water and dampness can both have devastating effects on
buildings unless they are waterproofed. Extended exposure to
wetness can cause your structure to deteriorate both inside and
out and can pose a health threat to people using the facility.
The costs involved in repairing a building which has sustained
water damage will be much higher than if you’d just waterproofed
it in the first place. A lot of people have a notion that a chimney made of brick or stone doesn't need any kind of upkeep. They picture these materials as being extremely tough and able to take care of themselves. Unfortunately, this is not really the case, and these homeowners eventually find themselves faced with crumbling mortar and disintegrating chimneys. Most of this damage is caused by water. Being on the outside of your house the way it is, a chimney withstands a lot of bad weather conditions, from hurricane-force winds to torrential rain to raging blizzards. Chimney waterproofing is an important step in preserving the integrity of your structure. Any time you build an outdoor structure out of wood that you don't paint or stain, it's a good idea to waterproof it to prevent water from soaking into the pores of the wood and damaging your building. This same thing is true if you have a wooden deck, no matter what type of wood it's made out of. Even if you used lumber that's supposed to be waterproof and resist rot, it's still a good idea to do your own waterproofing once every five to ten years in the interest of keeping the wood looking as good as new and to help it resist water damage. The cost of waterproof deck coating is always money well spent.
